Dedicated communication between master and slave

I need to have a dedicated communication between a Master and slave PLC, and monitor so that when the master dies, the slave should take over.I have an ethernet connection between the two.
I am using Linux Fedora core 3.Is Netcat preferable as compared to SSH? If so, why?
Or is there any other possible method.
I am a linux newbie.
Thank you
Rani
