Question DECNET working with 4.x kernels?

I've been trying to set up DECNET under Linux with no luck. I am using 4.5.x kernels in my tests, now 4.6. I get errors ranging from kernel warnings to full crashes which require a cold reboot to get control of the system back. Here is the basic idea of what I'm doing: http://www.retrocmp.com/decnet/decnet-on-ubuntu-setup Although this isn't Ubuntu (it's built from source, like LFS, similar to Arch mixed with Slackware), the setup commands are similar. I've tried with two nodes, and with one, with a simple ping service. I set the lladdress on the Ethernet card to AA:00:04:00:02:04, then modprobe decnet addr=1,2. I can see the expected info with dneigh and dnetinfo (from dnprogs-2.61 tool suite). The decnet config files from node 1.2 (node 1.1 has the node/executor line swapped):

Code:
/etc/decnet.conf:
##
##		DECnet hosts file
##
##--------------------------------------------------------------------
# Node Node Name Node	Line	Line
# Type Address Tag Name	Tag	Device
# -----		-------		-----		-----	-----	------
executor	1.2 name vdrl	line	eth0
node		1.1 		name		atr2

## EOF

/etc/dnetd.conf:

FAL            17         Y         root	fal
MIRROR         25         N         root	internal
MAIL           27         N         mail	vmsmaild
CTERM          42         N         root      	ctermd
DTERM          23         N         root      	rmtermd
NML            19         N         root      	dnetnml
*               0         Y         root      	internal

/etc/dnroute.conf
## dnroute config file
##
##
## --------------------------------------------------------------------
##
# Uncomment this to send level 2 routing messages. or run with -2
level 2

# Uncomment this to prevent dnroute from automatically setting routes for area 3
# manual 3

# By default, all interfaces have a cost of 4, you can change that here.
# eg. a multinet link might need a much higher cost than local ethernet.
eth0 4

## EOF

/etc/decnet.proxy:

.*::.* *

Some examples have the above with a "/DEFAULT" at the end, some don't. It didn't work for me either way.

kernel support (also tried with CONFIG_DECNET_ROUTER set):

CONFIG_DECNET_NF_GRABULATOR=m
CONFIG_DECNET=m
# CONFIG_DECNET_ROUTER is not set
I used ip (from iproute2 tool suite) to set the eth0 lladdress. Also, I tried with the macvlan functionality, to get maclan0@eth0, to avoid having to alter the lladdress of an ethernet card (thus changing other network parameters such as an ipv6 address). Same results. Results from dnping from node 1.2 (host vdrl) to node 1.1 (host atr2), dnping to itself on one node (1.2) and "sethost" from one to the next (machine #1 is node 1.1, address AA:00:04:00:01:04 and #2 is 1.2, address AA:00:04:00:02:04, both Linux hosts setup similarly):

Message on machine #2:

sethost V1.0.4
Connecting to atr2
ct_setup_link: Not bind from host
Exit 255
Tcpdump and/or tshark was used to capture the above output, other than kernel error messages and on-screen output from commands.

The header file above referenced, dst.h, at the line cited, suggests something to do with MTU. Both ethernet cards have "mtu 1500" listed in their "ip link show" output. I also tried without any routing with only one host, with dnping (MIRROR service) to itself. No good.

Does anyone have DECNET working with a modern kernel? All the info online talks of old kernels, such as 2.4, 2.6. I'm using 4.6.0 from ftp.kernel.org as of now. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong, or where the problem may be? It's hard to debug the problem when it often results in a machine lock-up, complete with a full filesystem fsck, once which had to be done from a rescue disk.

Do you have special reason that you have to use 4.6 kernel? It look like DCENET is old.

I need to set up a test to try this just for grins. We still have some dec stuff.

Well, just to keep up to date. Besides, my glibc here is locked at 4.1.2.

Code:
/lib/libc-2.23.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (GNU/Linux), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 4.1.2, not stripped
I know the code was basically abandonned back in 2014, but I was hoping I might be able to get it working. The tools still build (although Sourceforge "latest" link points to the dnprogs-2.5x branch instead of the 2.61 actual latest) so I thought maybe the kernel stuff would still be working. Heading back to a 2.6 kernel would be a massive project. Think of all the changes in between. I guess it's not that important; I simply find old networking technologies interesting (IPX, DECNET, etc.).

Sometime, two old technologies can work each other. And one new against one old could cause problem.
You should use two old technologies except it doesn't meet your requirement.
