[solved] debian netinstall select vlanID from trunk

Hello,

i have a server which receives 5 different vlans on its NIC.

I need to reinstall that server and I have the debian netinstall on it's cdrom. I connect to the server through a DRAC5 (or service network).

Here is the problem:

to get the software the software from the network I need the eth1 up and running but I can not manage to make it, I guess is because of more than one vlan are present on that NIC.

How I can set a vlanID on the netinstall to be able to connect and download the packages?

many thanks.

does the vlan come to NIC ?
I was thinking vlan is more of layer 2 bridge concept which stops in the bridge and you
get a ethernet frame to the machine ...

This machine was some days ago an ESX server, which received many vlans to serve vm machines to diferent networks. Since then the network configuration on the switch have not changed. So the ethernet wire still presents many vlans.

I hope that answered your question so you can help me . I'm not a network pro, sorry.

i guess vlan config 'vconfig' is not part of the installation CD/DVD
you may want to write to the debian CD list to add this option
as of now, it seems not possible to configure ur network card for vlan to enable it to
receive vlan frames.

Have you the control of that switch????
Just put a native vlan and put a tamporal administrative IP address to the server (not vlan)

Finally i've made what CArlost said, but thanks to the network admin who made me a favour changing the trunk to a single vlan while i needed.

Another day I will have to solve it as follows :

============= FROM Nixcraft admin ======
Actually you need to use ifconfig and vconfig (from vlan package):
Code:

vconfig add eth1 10
ifconfig eth1.10 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 up
