Debian iptables

When i type "iptables -L" under command line that login as root.
It displayed below messages:

Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.20-idepci/modules.dep
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables iptables v1.2.11: can't initialize iptables table 'filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

What should I do?

thx....

Hi,

What do you want to do ?
Install a firewall ?
Then install guarddog, sets iptables for you with
a gui.

# apt-get install guarddog

cheers

I want to set up the iptables.

I solve the above problem by updated the kernel.

But i have any other problem, how to save the change after i set the iptables rules?

I used the command:

"iptables-save -c" <---- but cannot work after i reboot the debian once.

"/etc/init.d/iptables save active" <----- it displayed "Bad argument 'save'"

have anyone know how can i do ?

I used
Code:
iptables-save > /etc/my-iptable-rules
and the load on boot with
Code:
iptables-restore < /etc/my-iptable-rules

You need create a bash script with an editor and then save the script as say rc.firewall in either /etc or /etc/init.d/.
Having saved the script cd to the directory and do chmod 700 ./rc.firewall . To get it running at boot time and say you saved it in /etc/init.d then do from a console;

ln -s /etc/init.d/rc.firewall /etc/rc2.d/S89rc.firewall. Now you need to do this in the runlevels rc3.d -> rc5.d so use the up arrow key so the line appears again and use the back arrow key and just change the runlevel from 2 to 3.

TigerOC - just a comment a good explanation for loading up the firewall at boot, but shouldn't the firewall be initiated a little earlier, before any network services such as Apache, MySQL, etc. would be started?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
