Unhappy Death Of A "ppp" !!!

Hi ! First of all I'm a newbie, so plz go easy on me with the technical jragon!!
I'm using RedHat 7.1, more like trying to use, to connect to my ISP. I have a motorola SM56 which I'm pretty sure is configured properly, when I try to connect to the ISP , using the debug option in RHP3, the ISP asks for a login name and a pasword then disconnects without specifying a reason... I tried to connect using KPPP and it said that serial loop back detected!! what does that mean???
umm, just to make sure that it isn't a modem problem I tried to us my older external modem... but with the same result...
THANX in advance for any help!

always best i find, to use wvdial and wvdialconf to get online first, if you can connect using that then you can think about using kppp or something else as annoying

i always thougth the sm56 wasn't properly supported, guess it must be if you get that far.

if you still get problems, it's worth setting up a log file for debugging ppp. you can specify one in /etc/syslog.conf, but i can't exactly remember what to put in it, as i'm not near my box now. there was a good document abouting setting up ppp that says how to debug it better, search somewhere for 'ppp setup', should find it.
