D-Link modem trouble

i purchased a D-Link external modem DFM-560ES 56k Data/Fax/Voice modem today. The modem works fine in windows in any system(hardware). i also tested it on a P-3 700MHz, 256MB SD-RAM running Red Hat Linux 8.0, it runs fine. i recently got a P-4 2GHz, 256MB DDR RAM but it does not run. In the P-3 i simply ran the 'kppp' and queried the modem, it detects it, but when i do the same in the new machine it cannot detect the modem. Please help me!

thanks for your time,
-vihan

Do the modem LEDs flicker at all when KPPP is trying to detect your modem?

found a solution

Yeah i noticed one of the LED's did flicker for a fraction of a second. i decided to try something what a friend suggested from Red Hat 7.3 unleashed. My modem is on com port 2(ttyS1). i simply logged in as root and typed :

ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem

this basically enables a symbolic link between the two directories. i had selected ttyS1 manually during my kppp setup but it failed to detect my modem(oddly another friend with the same modem got it). Anyway my modems's working just fine. Thank you very much rohang.
