Question CUPS printing

hi all,

i've got the following problem.
on my debian box i've installed CUPS. so, i go to http://localhost:631 and add a printer. when i've added the printer i try to print a test page, that works.

now i start up mozilla (or whatever) and try to print something and nothing happens...
so probably i have to set somewhere my default printer.

has anyone of you has an idea what i am doing wrong?

(btw here is my lpinfo -v output maybe is that any help to you)

In mozilla:
File->print...->Properites->Print command.
Put your print command in there. Easiest way I think is to put "kprinter"..i ya using KDE.

also look in your /etc/cups/printer.conf file. This is mine:

Code:
<DefaultPrinter hpdj520>
Info HP Deskjet 520
Location arnor
DeviceURI parallel:/dev/lp0
State Idle
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
</Printer>

asjapulk and treehugger tnx for your quick reply, but......

i am using fvwm2 as a desktop manager because it is a public system and in fvwm2 i can secure the entire graphical environment. the setup of the system is so that there can only run one program and the printer needs to be used by that program. and that is the only thing that computer needs to do.

maybe it is possible with using lpadmin? because in the man i read:

"
.....
DESCRIPTION
lpadmin configures printer and class queues provided by CUPS. It can also be used to set the system default printer or class.
....."

and maybe i am not understanding this right (because english is not my native language). but doesn't this say i can configure a cups printer as a default printer for the entire system?

( i prefer to configure my system in the CLI cause of the minimalistic setup of the system )

treehugger my printers.conf says this:

Code:
# Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.1.14
# Written by cupsd on Thu Nov 18 09:18:42 2004
<DefaultPrinter HP>
Info dokie's printer server bak
Location Afdeling Venne
DeviceURI lpd://172.16.1.236/LP
State Idle
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
</Printer>
-cheers-

looks like your default printer is set already, according to the printer.conf.

The problem must be something else.

Can you try the command line like this:

lp test.txt

to try printing a file you create, e.g. test.txt ?

If that doesn't work, try

lp -d hp test.txt
