Crossover cable network and ADSL?

I recently got an ADSL connection with a USB modem, which I can connect to either my windows or linux pc successfully. I would like to be able to share files between the two pc's.

Currently the ADSL connection is set up on PPP0. Will it be possible to connect 2 network cards with a cross over cable on eth0 without messing up ability to use the internet connection on both or do I have to go out and buy a modem and router? (my ADSL modem is USB).

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

two nics will work just fine. but yes, you do have to use a cross over cable. i have my home set up that way.

adsl --> ppp0 -->[archlinux box] eth1 -----xover----->eth0 [ubuntu]

just set up internet connection sharing. i use firestarter for it.
works great.

Thanks for your advice. I've now got a share working with Samba and no internet problems.
