Question Crazy network problem - please help me!!

Hi everyone.

I've had a very rough time of late...

First, my network:

D Link ADSL Router (DSL 504T), doing DHCP duties and connects to the internet for me. Three pc's connect to the router.

Now, Windoze (it pains me to write this) works fine, without a hitch. I can http, ftp, wget (yes I wget in windows), online gaming, EVERYTHING - no dramas, no special configuration. Firefox is set to 'My computer connects directly to the internet' and I don't set any DNS settings (they're set in my ADSL router).

Knoppix, as well, works fine - but Firefox doesn't work. It's also set to 'My computer connects directly to the internet'. Konqueror works fine, and here's the wierd thing, after I go to a website in Konqueror, I can then go to that website in Firefox. It seems that Firefox isn't hitting a DNS but will use the cached stuff. Wget works fine - don't know why I'm really mentioning this, though since I'm bit of a distrowhore I use it quite frequently.

Onto the installed OS's - Ubuntu and Suse 10.0. Both have the same issue. Firefox doesn't work - BUT if I set the proxy (within firefox) to any IP (such as 192.168.1.24 - which DOESN'T EXIST on my network) it starts to work. Wget doesn't work, and I can't do Suse YaST YOU or Ubuntu updates.

Can anyone help?! I'm getting really desperate here!

thanks,
Andrew

Try setting the DNS IP addresses manually in /etc/resolv.conf

Code:
nameserver 202.188.0.133
nameserver 202.188.1.5
Well, you would want to replace those IP addresses with your ISPs DNS addresses. Just a guess.

to see if its a dns problem or not, try pinging google by name, and by ip. if the ip works and the name doesnt, the above mentioned fix will work.
