Couple of problems with network (mepis)!


Hi everyone, I'm not really new to linux but in the last week I've discovered that networking isn't my forte (I'll stick to programming). Last week I decided to set up a wireless network, subsequently I've decided to scrap the wireless part of it but I'm still having a few problemswith a normal ethernet network.

The first problem is that if I connect to the networks on the (simplyMepis) 2.6.9 kernel, I can connect to the router but not beyond to the internet. I can connect fine on the 2.4 kernel. I believe this is because the 2.6 kernel loads the IPv6 module on the 2.4 one doesn't (dmesg appears to confirm this).

So my first wuestion is, how would I stop eth0 from using IP6?

The second problem, and one I only noticed yesterday is that (while running the 2.4 kernel) I can no longer "apt-get update", I get the errors like:

Err ftp://metalab.unc.edu unstable/main Packages
Could not connect to metalab.unc.edu:21 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out


I have no idea why it would be trying to connect to 1.0.0.0 .

Lastly my ADSL router (DLINK dsl-g604T) states that it can be configured from any web browser, yet theres a couple of things only work from IE so I'm thinking of returning it and wanted some input on this first!

If I go to ftp.us.debian.org in my browser it will apt-get will then connect and download the packages list from that server fine, it also downloads packages fine. So the problem seems to be with the DNS.

My resolve.conf has: "nameserver 10.1.1.1"

and route lists:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
default mygateway 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0
