Counting bytes with ifconfig

Hi
I have a problem with ifconfig and its output

It's about this row
RX bytes:981223126 (935.7 Mb) TX bytes:4191645335 (3997.4 Mb)

When the bytes value reaches 5000000000 it starts all over again at 0 bytes and I don't want that.

Is there a way to configure the byte counter or something so it could continue to count bytes ?

Here is a link to the script I'm working with Bandwidth meter

Thanks //

Have you considered NTOP to gather your stats?

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=ntop
or
http://www.ntop.org

It will give you great stats on your network performance, and comes with a built in web GUI...

ntop looks great but the problem is that I want to learn more about Linux and I want to learn to write my own programs.

Thanks anyway
