could not see other computers on the network
 

Hi Everyone:

I installed fedora 4 with every packages and turned the Firewall option in linux and have configure the network correctly and I could not see other computers (one windows and one fedora 3).

From the fc4 machine I always get Host Destination Unreachable when I ping the other two machines.

Among the windows and fc3 I have been having them up and running, I can ping and everything works nicely.

The fc4 has the asus k8ne-deluxe (64-bit amd using the nforce3 chip). I suspect that probably because the nforce3 chip has the built-in firewall in-side the chipset or so and it auto turned on by default. If that is the case is there a way to turn the firewall off?

I looked at the manual and it only comes with instruction for using the firewall in the windows environment. So if I use linux then I am pretty much out of luck.

I updates the bios to the latest and hope to see a setting that can turn off or disable such feature but so far I haven't seen it in the Bios setup.

I've checked the cable and switch that I connect the computers together and they are all OK.

And the hosts file has all correct ip addresses.

The network card (built in to the asus mobo) seems working OK since I check the network (neat) and it listed there and I can do the ifconfig alright.

COULD SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!!!


The 3 computers with the following basic network setttings:

192.168.1.x (x is replaced by a different number for each machine I have)
255.255.255.0

Might you not first try and see if it is the firewall - got no idea how to configure to check it, but this might be your problem. Most likely you'll need to explicitly specify which IP addresses to "allow" to be reached from your FC4 system. The machines you are trying to reach most likely do not have their IP addresses / adress ranges listed as being "supposed" to be available, and that is why it is not working.

Can you turn the firewall off? I am thinking it might be as simple as just "kill -9"-ing the process or daemon that is your firewall.

Thank you for your comments. Actually, in my original post I had the phrase "turned the firewall option..." in the 1st paragraph, that I actually meant I turned off the firewall option...". In other words, I don't have the firewall option turn on at all ever.

I will keep trying but I have tried all sorts of things and so far no success.

Again, like I said in my original post, I used the same network setting on the fc3 computer and it works fine without a problem. I can ping to the windows machine and vise versa. The only different as far as hardware goes is that the fc3 machine I have is an intel base and 32bit w/ 875p chipset & intel built-in nic and not AMD and 64bit like the fc4 machine w/ nvidia nforce3.

I will let you and everyone know when it is working.

Hi Everyone:

I am back after a while. And after my last post, I had tried trouble-shooting the network issue but still no luck so I decided I gave up and I sold the mobo and the CPU to a friend of mine who knows the whole thing I've encounter with the network but worry little because he would use it with Windows and as a stand alone PC. Anyway, that is all for now.

(Ultimately, I wish I could know how to fix this. Oh, well, not much I can do about. Just have to keep pressing on!)
