correct ports for samba?

smbd continues to refuse to run on my suse machine. are these the correct port settings from /etc/services?

netbios-ns 137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-dgm 138/tcp # NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm 138/udp # NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-ssn 139/tcp # NETBIOS Session Service
netbios-ssn 139/udp # NETBIOS Session Service

nmbd is running but smbd is not. when i check log.smbd, i see

[2004/07/14 18:34:13, 0] smbd/server.c:main(757)
smbd version 3.0.4-SUSE started.
Copyright Andrew Tridgell and the Samba Team 1992-2004
[2004/07/14 18:34:14, 0] smbd/server.c:main(791)
standard input is not a socket, assuming -D option
[2004/07/14 18:34:14, 0] lib/pidfile.cidfile_create(84)
ERROR: smbd is already running. File /var/run/samba/smbd.pid exists and process id 3077 is running.

still, swat tells me that smbd isn't running, and i can't access my network.

also, could someone tell me what my hosts.allow and hosts.deny files should contain?

/etc/services settings are correct.
swat is probably right when it tells you that smbd is not running.
do a "ps -aux | grep smbd" and see if it lists a process for smbd
Most likely it a problem with your configuration of samba
check the syntax in your samba configuration files.
for testing leave hosts.deny blank
and hosts.allow should contain
ALL:ALL

you should fine tune this after you get everything working.

First check for the process using ps aux, if you can't find any smbd process then check to see if the file /var/run/samba/smbd.pid really exist as stated by the log.
If so then delete it and try again. The pid file is used to track which process id the smbd is running under, and should be removed when shutting down. When the server crashes or shuts down improperly then this file may be left.
