Contacting DNS with Lynx/YUM

I am reaching the internet on my RedHat Linux box through a Windows machine via a proxy server (AnalogX) because of the limitations of my ISP and problems with my modem under Linux. Getting the browser to work was very easy. But I also want to be able to use Lynx and YUM. I set the manual proxy setup with (export http_proxy command) and Lynx can see the internet, but cannot contact DNS. I have the IP addresses of my ISP's DNS servers in the file /etc/resolv.conf, but Lynx cannot get name resolution. I cannot ping an IP address on the internet. If I attempt to contact a web site using its IP address it will connect.
