Connection timed out during "ftp put" process

I'm running an 'ftp put' from our RHEL 4 server, through the firewall to an external Windows server. I am sending a 3Gb file. The file transfer will run for approximately 45 minutes, and then ends with the following error:

netout: Connection timed out

About 90 percent of the file was transferred. I have run this several times, and still get the same result. If I send this file from a Windows box, then the transfer completes without a problem. I have contacted the technical people on the other end, and they have no idea why my 'ftp put' would fail from RHEL, but work from Windows.

Any ideas?

firewall? is there a firewall after windows box?

Yes, there is a firewall. Keep in mind, over 2 Gb transmits before the failure.
