Connection sharing works but cannot dial on demand
Hi there,
I'm reasonably new to linux. I installed Mandrake 8.0 on a P166 32mb and have got a nice little network running. I have just used the connection sharing wizard in the Mandrake control centre. If i dial manually my Windows box can connect to the web etc... but i cannot get the Linux box to dial up when i request a web page. Does anyone have a solution?
ANY help much appreciated!!
Chris
P.S. I can connect using Telnet but none of my accounts can login (even root). Thanks again.

ok, assuming your titel was a coincidence only, you need to check out a program called diald, which does Dial On Demand connection. you can get the rpm file from rpmfind.net, or find the source code somewhere else...
alternatively, you might prefer to use mserver, which gives each computer connected, a dialup connectino, allowing anyone in the house to dial as they want, which i prefer to diald, as i have more control.
I've no idea what the connection izard does, but if you say it works, i'll believe you.
i'm pretty sure diald will want to use low level dialing, like using the ppp program directly, rather than a more intelegent dialer. not sure tho, as i've never used it.
either way, all you shold need to do is go over the relevant configuration file for diald or mserver, and add all the relevant details.

You may want to test your wvdial to be sure it works, and if you need help setting up diald and making everything work you will most like have to do it by hand if the wizard fails.
look here for detailed instructions.
