Connection refused error

MY PC is windows 7; I'm using PUTTY version .60; I'm trying to connect to an embedded unit that has Linux as the OS; I know the IP address of the box; I can ping it.

I can use PUTTY to connect to my VM that is Linux.

When I try to connect to the embedded unit via PUTTY I get: "Network error: Connection refused"

Why?

I am VERY new to Linux and using PUTTY so if you know of a solution try to provide me with ample detail.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Sounds like SSHd is not running on the embedded unit, or, a firewall is on and actively refusing connections to port 22.

You didn't say what Linux distro is running on the device, so I can't tell you how to check it or start it.
