connection problems

I'm using Gentoo linux, installed it just a week ago. About three days ago I started having network problems. My internet randomly kicks me off extremely often. It's not my cord/card/port/ISP, as my roommate has zero problems and while on windows, I don't have have even a sag in connection. If this is caused by something in linux, how can i fix it?

Do the system logs show anything just before the connection drops? Gentoo, as with most distros, us fairly stable with network connections unless there are problems with the drive, especially if it's a cabled rather than wireless, so might be something else on the system causing it to fail. What network card do you actually have?
