Connection not shutting down on shutdown or restart

Hey,

I have a problem with a RH 8 server, where the network connection refuses to shut down on reboot and shutdown. This makes it impossible to reboot the machine remotely.

I have a standard 3com nic in a 2100XP+ machine.

I'm a first class linux noob so I dunno what info to submit that could be of help solving it...

Would be grateful for any sort of help.

What happens when you as root you type..
/etc/init.d/network stop

nothing happens, it stops when it says "shutting down eth0"...
