Connection Issue between Ubuntu Laptop and Windows Laptop

I am currently trying to create a connection between a laptop running windows 8.1 and another running ubuntu 14.04 to allow for streaming of positiion information from motion capture software running on the windows laptop. I am currently trying to do this through a 5 port ethernet switch, but I am finding it very difficult to set up and to find any information online. Any help would be greatly appreciated, or suggestions of a better way to set up the communication, it only needs to be transferred one way.

Please read networking HOWTO from

Also using dhcpcd for autoconfiguring of network devices is recommended.
