Connecting Windows XP to Linux

I am putting a new Windows XP on a network with a Linux server. I can connect to the server using Samba. However, when I attempt to map network drive and get to the connect to server screen, the user name defaults to:
computer name/user name e.g. (D/root). How do I either get rid of the default so I can simply log in with my user name or use Samba to setup a new user using the Windows default format?

are you trying to mount a share from the windows box on the linux box? or are you trying to map a drive that is shared on the linux box using samba?

if you are trying to mount the shared windows drive on the linux box use:
mount -t smbfs -o username=yourusername //ip/share /mount/point

windows always tries to map a drive using the credentials that you have logged in with. but when it fails i believe it prompts you to enter other credentials.

I am mapping the Linux server to the Win XP. The connection fails and no prompts come up.
