Connecting two computers via a Netgear router.
 

Ok....I am sorry if this has been gone over before. Perhaps I'm just thick headed and can't comprehend until someone staples it to my nose.

What I have is two computers connected via a Netgear router. I also have my cable modem connected through the router as well. On "this" computer....I have a printer connected to the parallel port. I would like the two computers to play, 'nice, nice" with each other and share the printer. At the moment, one must not have liked the way the other smelled. For they are refusing to speak to each other. :D IE: How do I set them up to communicate with each other so I can also share files between them?

Did I mention I'm a :newbie: ?.....Greenhorn.......Novice......Mainly just ignorant? :cry:

how are your ip addy's being handled? DHCP? just need to be sure they are on the same subnet...
Now, have you experimented with Samba? Assuming you want to share a printer from a linux box to a windows box? samba is just about the only way to go. if they are two linux box's, samba will still work.

Start there and let us know how you do. If this doesnt sound like a possible solution, maybe a few more details could give us the info we need for a better suited response.

These are both linux computers? Did you configure your network settings on each correctly? You're using DHCP via the router? Are you using NFS for sharing?

Good God.....I have no Idea! :( Yes, I 'm using....or should I say....trying to use Samba. Everything else you just asked made me cross-eyed! ;)


Yes....both are Linux computers. Tried it with XP...but finally gave up and switched the other one to pure Linux.

I didn't know I'd have to do anything to the NFS or DHCP. Tried the later and it gave me a warning about messing with it. :tisk:

What do I need to do?

Good morning LQ's! :D Is there anyone up and about that can help me set up the NFS and such? I'm looking through my manual...but not having too much luck. A lot of the stuff I just have to look at and go,:scratch: ? Any help to get me started would be appreciated.

It would really help if you posted the ip info on both of the computers. To do this, go to both of the linux computers and type:

ifconfig -a > ~/ip_info

This will create a file in your home directory named ip_info. Post this info because it would help so we could know if you are on the same network. I don't know if either of your computers are directly connected to your public ip, but you might not want to post that ip address. In case you don't know what private ip's are like --> 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Those are the type we are looking for. Not a public ip.

Ahhh...Ok..I'll check that out.

I did a bit more reading :study: and through "dumb luck" was able to get the computers to at least say, "HOWDY"! :D Thus, I was able to share files. However, the printer isn't so chatty.
