I've sifted through several newsgroups trying everything possible to connect to my Windows XP network printer, to no avail. I edited my /etc/sysconfig and am now able to browse the network shares, but when I try to add a printer in Yast, I put in the name of the Samba workgroup, the name of the host computer and the name of the printer share, but it says it isn't configured properly. I'm still rather new to this and would appreciate whatever help I can be given.
No, problem not solved. I'm just isolating my variables. This computer dual boots, and when it boots into Windows, I can use the printer. But when I boot into SuSE, I can't print. Sorry for the confusion.
Distribution: Mac OS X Leopard 10.6.2, Windows 2003 Server/Vista/7/XP/2000/NT/98, Ubuntux64, CentOS4.8/5.4

So basically you're saying Windows - Windows printing okay! LInux - WIndows printing = NOT okay.
Like I said, I use CUPS for printing LInux - Windows.
ALso, I have read that you can use the Windows Unix printing system. It is NOT installed by default in Windows. Go to your control panel and select ADD/REMOVE programs. Then select (on the left hand side) Add/Remove Window applications or something like that. Then search for PRINTING and there is Unix Printing system on there. Try that and see if it works.
Otherwise, post your smb.conf file starting from the printing section. It should start something like [print]
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/tmp
printable = yes
create mask = 0600
browseable = no
[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /var/lib/samba/drivers
write list = @ntadmin root
force group = ntadmin
create mask = 0664
directory mask = 0775
OK, I tried following that link and installing UNIX print services on the WinXP machine, but I think that's for the XP machine to print to a UNIX server. And things still aren't working. But some interesting things: At one point, I could click on Network Browsing and then Samba and see my Win shares, but now I can't again. But if I type the path smb://[computer name], I can navigate to it AND then I can browse to it thereafter. Also, using Yast, when I try to set up my Samba client and click browse, no existing workgroups are listed, but I can type in the name of the workgroup, BRASILNUT, click finish and it doesn't complain.
Also, I am using a D-link DL-524 router and tried opening up the ports I thought would be need AND i turned off the firewall on both my linux machine and the XP machine, to no avail.
Connecting to the Windows Network Printer from SUSE 9.1
Hey Techies,
In the last couple of days, I have been trying connecting my Laptop ( running SUSE 9.1) to the printer installed on the XP box but nothing yet has come up. I tried to follow some of the guides you posted but still a problem to solve.
Well I connect my Laptop that I can browse all the computers on the network but I failed to connect to the printer installed on the XP box. I have my samba client and server running absolutely well.
It was silly. After every combination and permutation of confuguration options, I finally added an account name and password to my Samba printer configuration and, voila, it worked. I've found no way it will work without them.
Well, now that it works, would you mind so terribly posting example code of this solution? I know it's rudimentary to know, but I can't find a simple how-to guide anywhere for this. This is also the first page that shows up when you Google :
Connecting a Windows 2000 network printer to Suse 9.1
A copy of the [printer] group with changed (for security reasons) usernames and passwords would be magnificent.
Thank you so very much in advance if you could be so kind as to do this. =)
Try using as a login for the printer the name of a user account on the windows machine and no password.
Also, make sure you put domain = MSHOME in all capes, as server the network name of the computer the printer is connected to (with Title Caps) and rename the printer shared name in windows to something simple like Brother, and in linux as Share or Printer = Brother. You may need the ip address of the windows server, usually this is 192.168.1.XXX, to find out in windows go to start, run, type cmd, in prompt type ipconfig, notice Ip Address also for the driver use a brand name one if applicable, but the generic PostScript one should work.
I also use Cups, so much easier (and Fedora Core 3 but that's more preference than nessecity)
I have a similar set-up, running SUSE 9.2, Windows XP, and a HP PSC 1315 connected to the windows computer. My Linux box can see the printer, and sends data to it fine, but the printer freezes everytime I try and print. 64kb are sent to the printer, and the rest sits on my Windows computer. I can't cancel the documents, either. I have to delete the printer from Windows and re-install. Any suggestions? Thanks.
