connecting to net over ethernet ADSL modem

I can't seem to get my beige box online :/

I have an ethernet modem connected to my PC that connects to the net via pppoa using DHCP and has relevent details stored in its memory. It works fine with my iBook but when I plug the ethernet cable into the PC I can't connect to any services. I thoughtg maybe my ethernet card might be at fualt but I can access the modem by typing in its url so I guess not.

I thought getting online would be a simple case of just plugging in the network cable but it doesn't seem to work.

(I'm using SuSE 8.2 & Morphix live CD) Morphix reports me as being connected but again wont connect to any host.

Any ideas are most welcome.

(oh, and I'm a total newb btw )

If you type ifconfig -a, does it show your ip for eth0? If so, then try, ifconfig eth0 up to see if you can get a connection.

Also make sure you have your ISP dns ip numbers in /etc/resolv.conf file.
