Connecting to internet via WXP network
 

Hi -
I have a small network of MS windows machines, all connected to the internet via my main pc, which is XP and has an ADSL modem connected directly to it.

I've now just connected a Red Hat Linux pc to the network. I'm having a problem gettingt the linux pc to connect to the internet via the main pc and its modem - this is almost certainly due to my stupidity, or at least complete ignorance of Linux.

The physical ethernet network seems fine: I can ping the linux box from my main XP pc. I get some sort of response when I ping the XP machine from my Linux machine. But it doesn't respond in the way I would normally expect with 4 reply lines (I'm not very experienced with this sort of troubleshooting so bear with me). What it does instead is keeps firing back lines that look like this:

64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_cmp_seq=23 ttl=128 time=0.341 ms

The seq= number increments by one every time and seems to go on indefinitely. Don't know what that is all about...

But the main problem is that in the Network Configuration dialogue box of the linux machine, I'm not at all sure how to set the options. In the Devices, Hardware, DNS and Host tabs, it doesn't seem clear to me whether I should, eg, be putting the Linux machine IP address, or the XP machine that has the internet connection.

Can anyone tell me what I should be putting in the DNS and Host tab fields? eg:

DNS -
Hostname: (XP or Linux?)
Primary DNS: (?)
Secondary DNS:(?)
Tertiary:
DNS Search Path:

Hosts -
What is supposed to go in here? Currently there are two settings:
127.0.0.1 - localhost.localdomain - localhost
192.168.0.10 - bob (this is the linux machines own IP address and name)

Sorry - almost entirely ignorant of linux stuff! Any advice would be gratefully received. I guess it's possible the lack of internet access has nothing to do with these settings?
