Question Connecting to a remote server

Hi everybody,

I'm a total newbie on Linux

I'm given an account on a remote server (IRIX 6.5, I think) with the following informations:

Host name, account name and password
Protocol type: rexec
Command: /usr/bin/xterm -ls -display $MYIP:$DNUM

I'm told to configure my X client to do this. I have an X server on my WinXP box that accepts these parameters, but for some reasons I have to use Linux to connect.

I use Knoppix 3.4 (Boot linux; mostly like Debian distro), and cannot find anyway to do that. Please help me

When you try to connect have you an error message?
With rexec protocol, should'nt you type:
Code:
rexec -l Mossaiby -p my_password /usr/bin/xterm -ls -display $MYIP:$DNUM

My Cygwin/X (http://x.cygwin.com/) installation on my MSWin box includes rexec.

I don't have a rexecd service running to test against, but I see no reason why your rexec connection should not run from Cygwin/X on your MSWin box.

What Xserver are you running under your MSWinXP?

Dear friends,

Thanks for replies. I could configure sshd and run X programs across a LAN using ssh on my laptops using Knoppix It was a great experience!

About my problem: now I know how to connect to the host, so I'll test it and post the results here.

BTW, I think there will be a problem: We use a gateway here which acts as a transparent proxy (so all connections seen to be from that machine outside our LAN). What should I set DISPLAY to? Will this configuration work?

Thanks again!
