connecting to a GoPro's wireless network

I recently got a GoPro Hero 3+ Silver Edition, and have been frustrated at my inability to do what the person in this video has done. With my phone (an old Symbian phone) I can connect to it and get the camera's webpage just like the Mac in the video, but I haven't had any luck doing this with either of my computers, both of which run Gentoo. I can connect to the camera with wpa_supplicant, but if I try to send anything to the camera it times out or gives me some variation of a "network is unreachable" error.

So, what is the difference between the connections that my computers are establishing with wpa_supplicant and the connections that my cell phone and the Mac in the video are able to establish?

It's not that important that I be able to connect to my GoPro in this way with my computers, but it is somewhat important that I understand how wireless networking works on my laptop, and frustrating that it's unable to do something that every other operating system seems to do automatically.

The GoPro is running Linux, Busybox, and Cherokee. It's meant to be used with a smartphone app that uses the webpage it provides to act as a viewfinder and remote control.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I solved it myself.

All you have to do is use ifconfig to set the ip address for the wlan interface to 10.5.5.x. I'll mark the thread as solved, but if anyone can explain why that's necessary or provide a better solution, you should.
