connecting SUSE 10.1 to NTL cable broadband

I am a total newbie to Linux so please be patient if I come across as totally stupid. :scratch:

I have decided to try to dual boot my 2nd PC using linux and windows XP. Windows is already installed and I am looking to install Suse 10.1 on a free, empty partition. Before going ahead with the installation I decided to try Suse out in live mode but I have run in to a problem in that I cannot access the internet with it.

I have had exactly the same problem when trying out Knoppix in live mode, my internet connection was also totally dead. Obviously the internet works perfectly with Windows so I am trying to find out how to get the internet working on linux.

I use NTL cable broadband and unfortunately NTL only provide technical support for Windows and won't get involved with Linux problems. Until I know how to get the internet working I don't think it would be wise to go ahead and install Suse.

My home network is a ntl:home 200 cable modem with an ethernet connection to a wired network router, this router is then connected to the ethernet ports of the 2 PCs on my home network.

Could anyone please tell me in layman's terms how can I get my NTL cable working with Suse 10.1

Your router doesn't care whether you run Linux or Windows, so an internet connection shouldn't be a problem on Linux. Look at the connection settings you have under Windows - particularly is you IP assigned by DCHP?
Also check on your router that DCHP is enabled, and no restrictions are in place in terms of client filtering etc.
Tell us what your network card is, perhaps it's just an unusual one that isn't supported by the live CDs?
As you've already guessed, contacting NTL will be no use. The problems you're having are your PC or router, not the NTL modem or NTL end of the connection.
