Connecting linux through a router

Hi I have an average router set up at home. A wire is run from the router to my PC (ethernet jack). I'm able to get online with windows. How do I configure linux to get online the same way as windows. I was able to get online before I had a router included in the setup. I ran a wire from the ethernet jack on my PC to the modem, and used a PPPoe client. I think my router handles the PPPoe, so i'd guess I don't even need this program anymore. I'm not sure if there's any more helpful information I could give. If there is please ask. Thanks.

State distro (or better: edit your profile so your distro shows up under your name)
State router make/model

In general:

Configure your ethernet port (eth0) to DHCP. Activate eth0. There is usually a dialog for this - look for a menue item about network devices type of thing. (or use "ifconfig eth0 start")

Open a browser - you can access the router configuration page by typing the IP into the address bar. Make sure that PPPoE is configured and not "bridge". (bridge is windows only).

That should be it.

Any trouble: post output of ifconfig.

Running slackware with a Belkin Wireless G router..

It looks like linux isn't detecting my card or something, I don't know. I was able to previously get online with linux, but I was connected directly to the modem and I used a PPPoe client. I reformatted my computer and bought a router. I remember before the reformat, when I typed ifconfig, it spit out another section 'eth0', instead of just 'lo'. Thanks for any help.

Here's what happened when I tried to activate eth0..

root@darkstar:~# ifconfig eth0 start
start: Host name lookup failure
ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information.
root@darkstar:~# --help
-bash: --help: command not found
root@darkstar:~# ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback

lspci will tell you if the card is seen
lsmod will tell you if the modules for it are loaded

Quote:
ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information.
... this means that if you type "ifconfig --help" it will give you a summary of commands. (The same is true of most all bash commands.)

I am sorry - I think you need:
ifconfig eth0 up
