Connecting Linux box to Internet through Win XP

I've been using Linux for almost 10 years. However, the question I have is more about computer networking than about Linux... at least that's what I think.

I have a Linux box connected to a Linksys WRT-54G WAP in an outbuilding at home. From inside the house, I can use PuTTY on my XP laptop to connect to the Linux machine and use it. That arrangement works well. However, I want to use this connection to connect the Linux machine to the Intenet via my laptop.

I set up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the laptop to share the dialup Internet access connection with the wireless connection. I've tried disabling the dhcp in the WAP and expected the laptop to issue dhcp leases (it will when set up with ICS). The laptop IP address for the w/l card is 192.168.0.1 (std. for ICS) and I can not ping IP addresses on the net from the Linux machine.

Something tells me that this can't be done the way I'm wanting to do it (over wireless), but does anyone have any ideas? Can I take the Linux box and share the laptop Internet connection over wireless?

If so, what do I have to do?

M

Pls tell me how this has done.

My office has a network as follows

netmask : 255.255.255.192
IP Nos from 10.101.63.65 to 10.101.63.125
gateway 10.101.63.126

I don't remember the DNS name server address

MY SUSE linux box connected to the internet and i am able to ping
all the machines in the network(including windows also)

I have downloaded some dvd images into my linux box. I would like to transfer these DVD images to the Windows machine in this network, which is a good performance machine and having DVD writer.

I tried to connect to the linux box from the windows XP machine through putty and ssh( putty in xp and sshd in linux). But I was not able to connect. The putty tried for some time and became failure.

I opened the configuration file for ssh and found almost all entries
are commented including the #port22.

The sshd daemon was up by executing the command /etc/init.d/sshd start

I think the daemon was started without the configuration(as they are commented)

Pls inform what steps should be done to configure the putty (or any client side ssh shell) and also to configure the sshd server in linux box

wow, talk about trying to hijack a thread...sunils1973 you should start your own thread

to mhauss i would look at the router to see if it is pointing to the xp laptop. if that is where the internet connection is, think of your laptop as a cable/dls modem and point the wireless router/access point to that. maybe that will work.

hope that helps.

Been a LONG time since I used ICS in Windows, this may help http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ I didn't sepend a bunch of time reading it (after all it's Windows), but looks like windows doesn't pass the dynamic IP from the router to the shared PC. So I guess it needs to be set to bridge.

I figured out how to do this

I put freeproxy on my laptop. On the Linux boxes, I set the default route as well as the DNS IP to the IP of the laptop. Now, I can dial out on the laptop and the Linux machines route to the Internet through the wap, which broadcasts to the laptop, which bridges to the Internet. It works perfectly fine.
