Connecting laptop to the internet via ethernet cable plugged into router.

I have been trying to connect my laptop to the internet via an ethernet cable plugged into one of the slots in my router. My wireless isnt very strong so i dont get a strong signal from the router because of where it is placed. I have used the same ethernet cable that is plugged in the router slot to allow me to go on xbox live and it works fine but when i plug it into my laptop nothing comes up and it is undetected. Any help???

Please tell us your distro.

Most modern distros will connect to your router if the cable is plugged in at boot time.

If this isn't the case, we need to know more (Your distro, and the output of the command ifconfig in a terminal, for a start.)

Welcome to LQ!

Which distro are you using? Have you tried configuring your ethernet card? In Gnome, you could do this with via System > Administration > Network - make sure that the card is enabled, and set up to configure itself automatically using DHCP (assuming your router does this, which it probably does). KDE and other desktops will have similar configuration tools. Then, as Tredegar says, you could try restarting the laptop with the cable plugged in.

If this doesn't work, please post the output of:
  • ifconfig
  • The section of lspci -vv that shows your ethernet card
