Connecting computer to access point

I have a wireless router setup and working downstairs. Upstairs I have an ubuntu 8.10 laptop but the wireless is broke on it. I have a wireless access point configured upstairs. The AP has a LAN port on it. My question is, can I connect the laptop to the AP via the wired connection? Thanks for any suggestions.

There shouldn't be a problem connecting your laptop via an ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your router. Alternatively you could check out what wireless cards/dongles are compatible with GNU/Linux and buy one for your laptop.

It's not the router I'm trying to go in to, but the access point that is upstairs.

Is it just a matter of plugging it in and running ifup eth0 up or configuring it via knetworkmanager?

Possible if your access point has a bridge mode and if it is compatible with the wireless router.
Depends on make/model but probably configured via a web interface. If the unit has the capability then instructions should be in the manual.
