Hi,
Iam a newbie to linux and unknowledgeable(read it as ignorant) about networking. I have a RH 7.0 workstation running on my desktop. I want to connect this machine with my laptop which runs windows.
I want to be able to access linux from my laptop(telnet?) and access my windows from my linux machine(wine?).
I just need to connect only these two machines. Both the machines have network cards installed in them.
My question is....Do I need a hub for connecting these two machines or can I directly connect them with the network cable without a hub? Also is there anything else that is required for connecting two computers? Please let me know.

Ok. Here is what I found on the internet. It looks like it is possible to connect two computers with Ethernet Network interface cards by Ethernet crossover cables. It mentioned something about 'assigning TCP/IP communication protocols to my ethernet card'. Iam a bit lost here. What does it mean? Does it mean installing the TCP/IP adapters on my machines? Wouldn't it be done automatically done after I install my OS (Linux or windows) or is it something I need to do on top of that. If you are new to Linux and to networking in general, I suggest reading over the HOW-TO's at Linux.com concerning networking. Down the road you will be far better off learning more than you need to simply get the two computers to see each other (rather simple really). The how to's are not very long and they are perfect for people new to Linux in general.

Please don't take this to mean that I don't want to help you. Whatever I would type here in the forum is already explained much better at Linux.com. The great thing about Linux is that EVERYTHING is documented somewhere!
