Connect to secure website using KDE + Chrome + Proxy server

I am writing this hoping to provide a solution to others (and not to forget it myself )

This is the problem: I have Unitrends backup running on some networks. I need to access Unitrends from outside that network over the internet.

Unitrends uses https and needs Flash to be configured. (Whoever designed this must be hanged!) But it means I have to use Chrome to connect to Unitrends.

I can SSH into a server on the private network. I use this server to forward the traffic to Unitrends. So it looks like this:

Code:
my computer <-> internet <-> remote gateway <-> unitrends
192.168.1.1 202.14.67.12 192.168.130.12
                             192.168.130.1
Now the Unitrends web server does not work when using port forwarding, i.e.
Code:
ssh -L 1443:192.168.130.12:443 myuser@202.14.67.12
does not work.

So what does work:
  1. Set up a SOCKS server on the local machine:
    Code:
    ssh -D 1080 myuser@202.14.67.12
You don't have to be root to do this
  2. Next go to KDE system settings, network settings, and set Use Manual Proxy Setting. Set only SOCKS proxy to:
    Code:
    127.0.0.1 port 1080
Do not set any other proxies. Setting other proxies ruins the setup.
  3. In Chrome, enter 192.168.130.12 in the address bar.
