Connect to Internet through cable

Hey,

I purchased a broadband internet service from my ISP. They offered me the cable through which I can use dial-up network wizard in Windows XP to set up the Internet access. I'm planing to install Debian on my old Desktop. Can any of you tell me the steps I should take to make the fresh Debian installation have the Internet access through the same cable please?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Depends on your service plan. Did your ISP say you need a specific IP address? A username and password to log in?

If you answered "No," then you're good to go. It will happen automatically, provided your Ethernet card is supported (and 99% of them are).

With most major ISPs, all you need is the cable modem, and possibly a router if you want broadband access for multiple PCs on the same line. Just plug your Debian box into the router and everything should happen automatically. In fact, if you have broadband, you might as well just download the 150MB net-install disk image, and have the installer do what little configuration there is for you.

Hey pda_h4x0r,

Thanks a lot for helping me!

My ISP gave me a username and password. And in the Windows, each time I want to have internet access, I have to click on the dial up and input the username and password. How can I set this kind of internet service account working in my Debian fresh installation please? I will not use a separate router. I will be learning to use Debian box as a router later.

Blessings,
Rocky
