, stop using the adsl-start? script, and just fall back to networking, the adsl modem/router or what not should be able to issue you with an ip address via dhcp, so just run a dhcp client and a connection should magically appear

This is all i do, but then my adsl modem deals with all the pppoe stuff
with regard to eth0 and eth1, it will not make any difference as to which is on what
