connect through router..

Hi,
I have Fedora core 2 installed on my computer. I used to connect the ethernet cord directly from modem to my computer previously and I used not to have any problem connecting on to my machine from outside. But now since I have att-calladvantage phone adapter connected between our cable modem and the ethernet port, I couldn't connect to my Linux pc from outside. Can anyone suggest me how to handle this?

thanks
S

seems the problem is your cabeling (sraight/crossover) or the build-in-between-box can't forward your traffic properly.

So what is a att-calladvantage phone adapter?
Something like VOIP?

Please explain how everything is connected.

<Edit>
Ok, I found the info on ATT's website. I'm guessing it should connect between the router and the modem. Have you read through the guides yet.
http://www.usa.att.com/callvantage/faqs/user_guide.jsp

Is this a dual boot PC?
Is the router still being assigned an IP address?

HI,
Thanks for the reply. Yes it VoIP adapter. The adapter is connected between the cable modem and ethernet connection to the computer. Yes the adapter assiged a new ip 192.168.15.85.
I opened up the web interface of the VoIP adapter and defined firewall rules also. But still I could not connect to my computer from outside.

Please help me resolve this.

you have the option to configure the firewall on that voip adapter - what options do you have there?
is the ip assigned to your box via dhcp from the voip?
check if you have some kind of mac-filtering and other security features set. does the phone thing work?

Hi,
Yes I have the option to configure my firewall. Also the web interface has Mac filter option. When I gone through to define fire wall rules, It has options like Global start port, end port, Local start port, end port and Server address.
What exact values do I need to enter in them? And can you help me define Mac filtering?

thanks in advance,
siva

no. i can't help you here - i don't know how that box works.
but to get it working i'd say to disable any security fetaures for now. if everything works you can switch them on again.
the box *should* allow you to connect to the internet in it's default configuration, google for more info.

No mention of the router. Is this a hardware router or a PC?

Did you follow the instructions per the cable users guide? The users guide mentions the TA install guide for troubleshooting no internet connection.

You say the adapter is being assigned an IP address. Which adapter?

Hi,
I am sorry there is not router here. It is VoIP adapter and it came with the new ATT call advantage internet telephone connection which I've taken recently. I followed the instructions and I could connect to internet fine. That is not my problem. My problem is that I cannot access my computer from my office which I used to before. The VoIP adapter assigned the above mentioned IP address and it is changing time to time. I would really appreciate if you can help me solve my problem.

thanks,
s

Ok I understand the sitch now. After reading the user guides...

The TA is a router of sorts. It performs NAT and has a DHCP server. Your PC is being assigned an local IP address (192.168.15.x) from the TA unit. The guide does not go into details on the available options.

How do you conect to your PC? What services etc? Look at the TA configuration webpage and hopefully you can foward ports.
You can signup for a free dynamic IP address host like www.noip.com. Then you do not have to worry about when the IP address changes.

HI,
I usually connect through putty on port 22 from my office. I have gone through the web interface of the TA and I found that I have the option to define firewall rules. When I gone through it, I found out that I need to give "Protocol - Start Global Port - End Global Port - Start Local Port - End Local Port - Server IP" . One thing I don't understand is that what is the server IP? Aslo can you help me define MAC filter?

thanks

The server IP address will be the IP address of your PC (192.168.15.85 from your previous post). The address is being assigned by the TA and as long as you only have one PC connected this will remain the same.

A MAC filter is a way of restricting access. A MAC is basically a unique identifier that is hard coded into a network interface. MAC stands for Media Access Control. In a console window type in the command :
/sbin/ifconfig eth0

This will show your network interface information. Among other things the IP address and MAC.

Hi Michaelk,
The IP address is constantly changing. Each time I define firewall rules, save and restart the TA , I found that the IP was different than the previous one. Is there anyway to make it static?

thanks,
siva

To configure the PC for a static IP address run the command:
redhat-network-config
