Connect problems using KPPP..help :(

I have gone through so much trying to get the internet to work with my modems, i first started off with the infamous motorola sm56 which i got to work on mandrake 8.2 maybe 3 years ago but since then i stopped using linux, now on my Mandriva LE 05 i couldn't get it to work, so i whipped out my extremely old external rockwell 33.6k :D and it was having problems connecting, somethign to do about a missing package, so i reinstalled mandriva (i waasn't bothered to figure it out) anyway when i reinstalled and tried again all i got was busy signals. Well now i got an internal PCI modem off a friend, it is a conexant HSF (yes winmodem but i have got it to work using the linuxant drivers with full 56k) anyway hoping it was a modem problem the conexant wouldn't connect either, i still got busy signals, i even tried calling other phone numbers, and all i got was busy signals, for 1 hour straight i sat ther trying to connect, then i rebooted, came into windows, and i got on straight away, so i don't know whats going on here, any idea guys?

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to LQ!

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I haven't run into this problem before, but it sounds like it could be a driver problem. Do you know which driver you're using? Where did you get it? If you're not sure, post the output of "lsmod" (at a command prompt) and I'll make a guess :-).

Has anybody else had this problem?

Hey, thanks, it's not a driver problem cause it happens with other modems aswell, for the modem which i WANT to use, the driver is the generic HSF conecant drivers from www.linuxant.com, i can't lsmod at the moment i booted into windows to check respones, i have searched the net and people have ran into this problem, with no solution unfortunately...

Updated information: I think the busy signal is only a fake signal, the modem is interpreting these beeps when the number is dialed as busy signals how i know this is because i tried dialing my ISP and after a while i can hear 'real' busy signals, i am not sure why i get those busy signals, but i then tried dialing other phone numbers withh my modem and it works, but i still get the 'fake' busy signals. I hope i didn't confuse anyone, i hope this information helps, this is really bothering me, will updating my kernel help in any way?

Dear ardent,
I had a HSFLINMODEM with me. It was working fine. Even i encountered the same problem. I installed the hsflinmodem i586 package and it worked. After installation, configure kppp, it works fine. But be careful about winmodems, they stop working all of a sudden ! I had done a

rpmbuild --rebuild on the source package i think.
then installed the rpm.
Once i got a new DAX modem, things are fine for the last 8 months.

So suchi, you had the same problem as me? how did you resolve it? you wouldn't happen to still have those drivers would you? are they from linuxant? if you don't mind could you please explain to me the steps required in getting my modem to work. Also i'm not sure if it's a modem problem, because other modems are doing the same thing.

Thanks

RESOLVED!

I have finally gotten this to work, how, i installed Xandros 3, my modem worked, so i thought, ok so it's not my ISP or modem, i couldn't compile my 56k modem drivers though, i needed the kernel source which would take way too long on my 33.6, but my 56k does work cause the free 14.4k drivers worked. Anyway i reinstalled Mandrake, and my modem worked! yay, but only in root, i couldn't login as any other use, i got these errors about read and write, so i reinstalled, then finally i could login, my modem worked, but, i couldn't open anything, i keapt getting errors about "cant open <insert site here>" i couldn't connect to anythign, so, i reinstalled AGAIN, and finally! Everything works, i hope anyway, 4 installs of Mandrake is not bad <sarcasm> but i love linux, so hopefully everything will be ok in later releases, i just hope nothing screws up now, thanks to everyone who helped me out!!
