confused about imap

i want to install squirrelmail on a server
the install doc says it needs a imap daemon running on it
i dont see any imapd running on it but it had sendmail running on it...
is sendmail a imap daemon? if not...what otehr daemons should i be looking for that maybe running...

No sendmail is not an imap server, what disto is it?
I personaly use courier imap though there are a lot to select from

there already is an imap server installed on the server but i dunno which one it is or how to find out where its installed
its supposed to be a default fc2 installation
