Confirm network settings -web server, fc3

How do you check your network settings on fedora core 3 via the shell prompt?

A simple question for the noob.. I can't get my domain name to work on my home server, you see. My dns settings seem to be correct with zoneedit, my registrar and router but i want to just confirm what my server's network settings are as i am a little stuck at this point. I enter my domain at the address bar but i can't get through to the apache test page after i've started up my http daemon. I can't connect. And i don't suppose you have to leave apache on for a few days either so my dns is resolved . A little stuck. There's a 'register new name server' part to my registrar domain panel login. i feed it the ip addresses to the 2 name server's, zoneedit gave me. But theni guess these are not new name server's such as nameserver.domain , the format requested in the error message. however the nameserver's are changed so i guess that is all that's required to do at the registrar end. And the ticket man said my name server's were changed.

Basically when i enter my domain in the address bar and key 'return' i get the 'timed-out ' error message.

'the operation timed out when attempting to contact domain '

someoneelse in a webserver forum said it was likely a dns error rather than a server error but i'm not sure if it's possible to messup the netwrok settings at the server end, and if so how to check what i entered during installation(server install choice) in terms of ip numbers. I was a little unsure during install.

any feedback appreciated

thx:newbie:

(sorry, this is probably in the wrong forum, newbie forum more appropriate)

Did you just sign up with zoneedit? DNS info can often take a day or more to propagate. Can you connect to your server by IP address instead of domain name?

Yes.- zoneedit

No.- neither domain nor ip address does not connect with apache running.

How do you identify your server's ip address through the command shell of fc3?

My ip address (A record) has just changed so looks like i'll need to set up dynamic dns for my isp's dynamic ip addy. BUt i want to just check i can get it to work with a static first as the dynamic dns setup i have not investigated yet.

i have'nt had apache running long- straight away to a few hours

thx

on your server type the commands below, i think one of them should work, but i dont use FC.
ifconfig
ip addr

oh, you might need to log in as root to do those commands.

Still have been unable to resolve this issue of connecting to my domain i bought thrgough my webserver. everything appears okay...well dns settings do. the ip address for server is the same one the router has assigned as open for port 80, so looks okay 192.168.220-server (dhcp client/router hands out within range of 1-128 where this no. is the last figure on the ip address list of digits.)

i'm thinking my SElinux is configured too strongly as i did get an error message initially when i tried to start up apache previously for he 1st time where it said my ssl certificate was missing ( i.e server probably needed securing) . i don't get that problem now however-apache starts up fine now .(after i changed the ram)

however i'm thinking the way security on my webserver is configured may well be too tight. in particular SElinux configuration. hence why my domain shows 'timed out errror' message when i try to connnect. i've been working on this particularproblem for least 2 weeks, probably a month actually. ( i've posted the same topic/problem on cable/dsl home webserver forum under dns/domain section)

  :Pengy: :study: :o :newbie:

I need to fucking master that command line one of these days, at least the basics .

oh and i've got that xfce desktop/wm running on fc3 with, i'm pretty sure ,SElinux enabled ( when i went through install). troubleshooting the webserver, anyone ? ? (dns appears fine)

THREAD TERMINATED AND SWITCHED TO A MORE APPROPRIATE FORUM...so just ignore this
