Configuring Samba and sharing an internet connection
Hi. I've been experimenting with this for the last few days trying to get it to work but with zero success. I have a few problems and even if I can get help with just one, it'll be progress. Ok. I have two computers. One running redhat 9 and one running windows 98 first edition. Unfortuntely, I am stuck on aol so i have to share my internet connection form my windows box to my linux box. I installed samba and configured it, kind of. I wasn't really sure what i was doing with the smb.conf but it works sort of. I can write to my linux box from my windows box but not the other way around. This is my smb.conf file:
# Global Parameters
workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = linux
encrypt passwords = yes
[homes]
read only = no
browseable = yes
I don't know why i can't write to my windows box from linux.
Also, I can't seem to access my shared windows printer.
Since I have windows 98 first edition, i can't use the Microsoft ICS program. I tried downloading another proxy program but i had no idea how to configure it.
I will be more than happy to answer any addition info about my currnet network configuration because I am truly baffaled. I'm trying to learn linux but it isn't the easiest thing in the world. I'm making progress though. I'm pretty proud that I was able to get the sharing at least halfway working without help. I know when I need some extra help though.

are you running a firewall on the windows machine? if so, have you tried turning it off?. there are a number of proxies available for download, i suggest finding one w/some sort of support, namely a good set of help files or tutorials. at one time you could've downloaded or ordered on cd the updates to first edition to make it se, i'm not sure if you still can, i believe microsoft has dropped support for 98 as april this year. you may try that option however, head over to windows update, and see if you can still get ics. hope something here helps.
good luck.
I got it to work with a proxy called PPPshar but i was wondering if there's a way to set up access to the whole machine or do i have to configure each individual application?
Well, its not a big deal as firefox and gaim both work. I just have a couple of small problems left. I get a LOT of 404 errors when browsing with firefox. does this seem like a problem with the proxy settings or is it a firefox issue. I'll be browsing get a 404 and then a couple minutes later, it works fine. Also, it seems that sometimes firefox is looking for thisngs on the wrong server like i'll type in a new site and it will look for it on the site that i'm currently on. It's going to the wrong site a lot. I got printer sharing working though. The only other problem is when i was using the up2date for the first time i typed in the wrong port for the proxy and now it won't work at all. What should i do about this?

is firefox having any issues w/ ip addresses, you might try that, and see if it's a dns issue. other than that i'd suspect the proxy first. for up2date configuration have a look at this
how can i test if its having a problem with IP addresses? I remember hearing something about dns somewhere but i'm not sure exactly what it is and how it relates to my networking situation.
