You do not specifically need DNS. You simply need one machine to be able to address the other. Whether that's by IP address, by DNS or by hosts file entries it doesn't matter.

Hi,

If the one posted by Zordrak is to difficult, try this one:
NFS HowTo. It's a VERY simple and basic one for Ubuntu but you should be able to figure it out for your RedHat 4 also.

Kind regards,

Eric

It you configure the service to start in the run levels 3 & 5, it should be running. You can use "/usr/sbin/showmount <host>" to show which directories are shared. If the service isn't running, you will get an error (showmount: RPC: Program not registered). This will allow you to determine if the nfs server is running, from either your Red Hat server or from one of the client computers.

Also look at the service command. sudo /sbin/service nfsserver status
Keep in mind that sometimes the nfs server is a userland daemon. Or it might be running in the kernel. It depends on what you installed.

Be sure to look in the Red Hat documentation as well. It may guide you on how to configure nfs. It may use one of the system-config gui tools as well which you might find easier to use.

thanks a lot for such a nice link.I want to clear one thing .My server IP address is 192.168.1.10 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the 2nd Linux machine IP address is 192.168.1.20 subnet mask 255.255.255.0

in the vi /etc/exports file can IP address instead of name which want to access the file

/music 192.168.1.20(ro,sync)
/home 192.168.1.20(rw,sync)

or I should also mention the subnet mask also
