Config file distribution & NFS (2 questions)

At work I use RedHat 9 and Fedora 1 for all of our servers. What is the best way to transfer config files between machines. I was recommended rdist which from my reading sounded good, but I've noticed here that most people think its a security risk. Opinions any one? Alternatives?

Secondly, I do most of my administration on a Linux Latop and would like to be able to connect to the servers to access everything. NFS conceptually is what I want, but again, the security risk has me second guessing it's viability. Is there anything else out there that you guys would use in the "enterprise" that would allow easy yet secure linux to linux file sharing?

For secure file transfers, scp is probably the best. For automated secure backups see my 2 LinuxAnswers:
Public key authentication with ssh
Using rsync to mirror data between servers
