computer name "localhost"

Hello guys,

I had my samba server up n running till I had to restart the machine because I was physically relocating it. Now when I run linux and manually start smb service, my linux machine does show up in the windows network places but it's called "localhost" instead of previous name "LTFX". Now the problem is when i try to access this computer my windows machine errors out, "Name in conflict, blah blah". I'm assuming it's because my linux is called localhost and localhost is usually the computer itself.

My simple question is, how can I change this name? I'm on RH9, I'm in shell and can't access GUI.

Any help will be appreciated.
deWin.

check smb.conf if u have there
Code:
[global]
  netbios name = YourDesiredNameHere
also u can edit your /etc/HOSTNAME to set the computer name to something else than localhost (but of course that setting in smb.conf override this)

my etc/hosts file had an entry 192.168.10.5 LTFX.cgn LTFX

does this sound right? I know the local IP also changed from the DHCP because i put it in a new slot on the network so I changed that to the correct one, but is the rest ok?

AFAIK settings in /etc/hosts doesnt matter for samba, be sure to have 'netbios name' specified in smb.conf

actually the netbios name was not there for some reason and I've put it in. Unfortunately I'm not on my own network so I can't verify if it's working but I will get someone to physically check up on it and I'll report back.

I'm assuming I'd have to restart smb service, done that already.

BTW samba uses the computers hostname as default if you do not specify the netbios name in the config file. I would assume that the default smb.conf file didn't have a netbios name. The host name is configured in the /etc/sysconfig/network file. You might of changed the host name using hostname utility and didn't update the network file. When the PC was rebooted the host name reverted back to localhost which with Redhat appears to be a default.
