The conclusion is this:

Perhaps reverting some patch made the trick. I applied the other patches I needed and the attached patch (I copied from the link in my previous post)

Compiled for kernel 2.6.38-9 , wireless compat version 2011-05-05.

Awesome, I knew it had something to do with that. Glad you got it figured out though, as I was thinking about going a different route just a few seconds ago. For some reason, I always want to do things the hard way
