communication problems between mail client and email server

I have a new email ISP (tpg.com.au) and a few problems with it. In theory I need to ask them how to fix it but those people always give a standard answer designed not to affect their image and it is not always the solution, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had experience with these problems and a possible advice or solution.

I could not get Debian 7 "Evolution" to "shake hand" (or whatever) with this ISP email server, it is in a loop asking repeatedly to "..enter the imap+ password for 'myname' on hostname 'theirname'". The password verification seems to fail although the same password (and user name) is accepted when I go straight to the mail server of this ISP. It seems Evolution finds the other parameters or the server is able to set up these parameters on the client.

I then installed Icedove (rebranded Thunderbird) which gave a similar problem the first time, however re-entering the password in the set-up of Icedove (which is not an option with Evolution) fixed the problem, I can now access the mail through Icedove but I have a number of items in a "drafts" folder on the server that I want to save to my computer and they do not show, Icedove only shows mail in "Inbox" on the server and it has no option to "work offline" (which could have offered an option to download these files).

Any hint/advice/thought that will allow me to refine my questions to the ISP (they wipe out everything after 45 days) are most welcome since I know nothing on the subject.

Thank you for your help.

The IP you are issued with as you log in belongs to:'isp.com', You are somehow under THEIR domain, in their view.

So if you have your domain in a mail server (which server?) in the postfix main.cf or whatever it is, the isp may well reject it as foreign server (= a hacker) trying to log in. No dns check for this afaik.

You can run most of that server stuff in debug mode - on terminals, or with copious logs. Find out what is going on. Then some bright spark might fix it.

First rule of this is: "If it works, don't fix it!"
Secondly, if you don't know what you did to fix it, back up all the config files as they are so you can recreate it. ASnd learn about it.
