collisions and samba....

I have posted this before when I ran Fedora and I am getting it with Slackware too. I get collisions on my switch when transferring data between machines using Samba. This is starting to concern me as I can't see how I'd be getting them. And I should mention, it's constant collisions too. I did a little bit of searching here and found people mentioning running in half duplex mode on my NIC card but I'm just wondering if there are any other suggestions.

network collisions occur at the data link layer and are pretty much application independent. if you are seeing a correlation between collisions and samba it may be due to the size of transfers or something but has nothing really to do with smb. i am assuming ethernet, have you eliminated your nic/nics as a possible problem?

I know my Windows one operares at 100Mbps....Linux I believe is the same as well....how/what would you recommend I do to fix it? I am using a 10/100 Auto Sensing Switch too. I am still learning Slackware so bear with me there.

How do you know you are seeing a "lot of collissions" ?

Do you have any layer 2 stats out of the router/switch ?

With a hub you might have to isolate, but with the switch only thing to check is full/half duplex configuration.
Both ports should be set to "auto" .. if that doesn't work .. force them both to half before doing full ..
generally auto-detection is almost flawless unless there is a flaky piece of hardwware somewhere

I got it now...I had to monkey with the duplex settings on the Linux box (use 'mii-tool' command for any newbies who don't know). I never really thought duplex settings would affect it like it did but it did...maybe it's an odd piece of hardware, I dunno. Of course here in a few weeks I'll be getting a new ethernet card anyways. Currently, Windows is running full duplex 100Mbs and Linux is running full duplex 100Mbs....and honestly...I think transfers are much faster now than before. Guess performance degraded before where the network had some compatibility issues.

As for collisions, ifconfig ran normal and showed no collisions...but the collisions I mean were on my switch. The collision light lit up like a night light when I transferred files. But all is good now.
