Closed ports?

$ telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

I am using mandrake 8.1 basic workstation install (medium security).

I am a linux newbie all i have is basic linux command line skills, and basic admin skills.

I tried searching this forum for help and found quite a few topics about problems telnetting, thing is I either didn't understand or the help offred by them didnt help me.

My thought was that either a fir
ewall is blocking the port or there is not a telnet service running.

How can I see the telnet service is healthy? how can i make it if it isnt (this one may be a stretch)?

I am trying to get telnet working for a start. After i figure this out I will probably disable it and put up SSH. I also would like to figure this out so in the future i can run web and FTP services off this box.

I'm not sure what else would be useful, like i said i am a newbie... if any more info would help ask me for it (and how to get it if it applies to linux).

So far my expeiences with linux have been great, everyone is willing to help a newbie (which is unusual),

Greg

run ps -ef |grep telnet verify it is running.

then run netstat -nap verify the port is open (21)

If your telnet-server is started by inetd, it won't show with a ps. Try looking at the inetd.conf file, and look for something like:

telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

If there's a # infront it's not running. In this case remove the # and do a killall -HUP inetd

Then you should be good to go

ps -ef |grep telnet returned:

$ ps -ef |grep telnet
greg 2457 2424 0 18:58 pts/0 00:00:00 grep telnet

My username is 'greg'. Not sure if this is good or bad, I think its good...

as for netstat..

Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:32768 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN -

Hard to read, its the first or 2 sections. The other section is:

About open sockets, I can't even find any port numbers in there (and im having a hard time copying from terminal actually).

Under the Active Internet connections I can not find a ip:23 for telnet.

As for inetd.conf I couldn't find it. I seem to remember reading somewhere that mandrake stopped using inetd. 'find inetd.conf' couldnt find it either. Maybe i'm just stupid, where dose inetd.conf hide in the filesystem?

Thanks
Greg

sorry netstat -l this shows daemons that are listening.

also if you are running 7.1 or 7.2 RH you may be using xinetd instead of inetd look for an xinetd.conf in the /etc folder
