clearos and static ip

A while ago i posted here about a problem with motherboard halting on fdd check with clark connect. Well, that problem has gone away (I must find the post and mark it closed...). I have now switched to clearos and need to connect to the box from another pc to finish the install.
I duly set the following imformation with ifconfig:
ip address: 192.168.1.102
bcast: 192.168.1.255
mask: 255.255.255.0

I then set the dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf (I presume this is right?)

I am able to ping the ip address from another computer on the network, and to ping that computer from the clearos box (plugged into the router) but i cannot view http://192.168.1.102:81 or any variation thereon.

the settings on this computer (ubuntu):
ip address 192.168.1.101
bcast: 192.168.1.255
mask: 255.255.255.0
route: 192.168.1.1
1st dns:194.168.4.100
2nd dns:194.168.8.100

I have not tried to set the route as I am uncertain how to do it. Neither have i restarted network interfaces on the clearos box, as again I don't know how.

the router leases dhcp addresses between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.199.

As far as I am aware, no firewall is running - i turned it off.

Apologies if i am being very stupid, but any ideas?

Is there an application listening for connections on port 81?
On the .102 machine, run
Code:
[user@machine:~]: netstat -n | grep ":81"
and post the results here.

success!

Immediately after posting I idly clicked the url i gave you - and connected!

No idea why that didn't work, but i can probably mark this solved, as i have web interface and ssh. Unfortunately i have only one network card at the moment as i can't get the wg511 working properly (typical..) and my portable add-ons Ethernet+ card doesn't even show up. I'll stick a usb stick in for now and hope...

Thankyou very much for your time and sorry to have wasted it.
