cifsmount - "SRV: Bad Password"

HP-UX 11.31 Sep 09 QPK
Trying to mount a windows share on my hp-ux server.

The following command is failing:
cifsmount -U user -P pass //server/backup_share /mnt/backup_share
SRV: Bad password
SRV: Bad password

This had been working for over a year, then all of a sudden just stopped. The "user" account is valid. I can rdp to the windows box using the "user" and "pass". Password and account are set to never expire on the windows machine.

I can start and stop the cifs client with no issue. I reviewed the debug log, but really didn't see anything that stood out.

any help is greatly appreciated; backups are currently failing....

Greetingz!

First off, this thread should be moved over to "Other *NIX", as this is HP-UX related (and not Linux-specific). (Don't repost this thread in that forum, as double-posting is bad form, and typically looked at as spamming. If a mod sees this thread, hopefully they'll move it.)

Now, about your problem. Nothing on the Windows-side has changed recently, correct?
1) The Windows system isn't running a host-based Firewall?
If it is, make sure the correct ports are open and your particular host is allowed.
2) The Active Directory structure hasn't had any changes yet, right?
The Username & Password you use will have to be recognized by the Windows system as either an Active Directory account, or a local account (on the Windows box).
3) The password doesn't have any "Bad Characters" in it, right?
HP-UX is/was notorious for having problems with passwords that had $ or @ in them. Also, if the password is more than eight characters long, that could pose a problem.

I would suggest the following;
1) Setup a local account on the Windows system.
Use a "short" username (eight chars or less).
Use a "simple" password (no metacharacters, and eight characters or less)
Be sure to set the permissions to both the share and the directory to allow the local Windows account access!
2) Test the mount.
Try not specifiying the "-P Password" part of your command;
Code:

cifsmount -U user //server/backup_share /mnt/backup_share
It should prompt you for the password. Punch it in manually and see if it works. If it does, then specify the password on the command prompt.

NOTE:
If the password for the Windows account you are currently using DOES contain metacharacters and/or "Special Characters" (as defined by your shell), then you need to escape them. For example "myp@$$" would have to be "myp\@\$\$".

Good Luck!

Found solution:

On Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP the setting of the Registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\LMCompatibilityLevel must be 0, which is the default setting.
